Mistakes that can reduce the effectiveness of your facial sunscreen

BEAUTY ROUTINES

You've been using facial sunscreen before leaving the house for years. You think you're doing it right. But what if I told you that you're probably making some of the most common mistakes that are preventing your sunscreen from working as it should?

This isn't alarmism. It's simply that most people apply sunscreen incorrectly without realizing it, and the results become visible over the years: blemishes, photoaging, and skin that doesn't have the real protection it deserves. The good news is that correcting these habits is much easier than it seems.

Apply less than necessary

This is undoubtedly the most common mistake. A small amount of product is not enough to achieve the SPF indicated on the packaging.

For SPF 50 to work properly, it's recommended to apply approximately one teaspoon of facial sunscreen to your face and neck. Using less will significantly reduce the level of protection, making it more effective than SPF 15 or even lower.

Therefore, applying sunscreen generously is essential to ensure effective protection against UV radiation.

Forgetting the key areas

There are parts of the face (and body) that are exposed to the sun all day, but rarely receive protection. These are precisely the areas most prone to cumulative sun damage.

  • Ears : small, forgotten and very exposed.
  • Eyelids : a delicate area that also needs sun protection.
  • Hairline : where the sun usually stops halfway.
  • Neck, décolletage and nape : the great forgotten areas of the sun care routine.
  • Back of hands : exposed to UV radiation daily without you noticing.

These areas accumulate sun damage easily and are especially prone to the appearance of spots and premature signs of aging.

A good trick is to apply facial sunscreen with the same care as you would apply a moisturizer, making sure to cover your entire face evenly.

Do not reapply sunscreen throughout the day

Facial sunscreen isn't permanent and doesn't stay intact for hours. Sweat, friction from clothing, face masks, touching your face... all contribute to a gradual decrease in its effectiveness. That's why experts recommend reapplying sunscreen every two hours when there's continuous sun exposure, even in the city.

The problem? If you're wearing makeup, reapplying seems like an impossible task. This is where sun sprays and mists , or sunscreen sticks, come in, allowing you to renew your protection without having to remove your makeup or start from scratch.

Apply it just before leaving home

Many people apply sunscreen right before heading out the door. The problem is that chemical filters need between 15 and 30 minutes to become effective on the skin. If you expose yourself to the sun immediately, you'll spend those first few minutes without effective protection.

The solution is as simple as applying it before getting dressed, as the last step in your skincare routine. That way, when you go outside, the product is already ready to protect you.

Choosing a sunscreen that doesn't suit your skin or your day

Not all facial sunscreens offer the same textures or care requirements. Choosing the right formula can make a big difference in comfort and tolerance.

Oily or combination skin

Light, fluid or gel textures help control excess shine and are more comfortable for everyday use.

Sensitive skin or skin with rosacea

Opt for formulas with mineral filters ( zinc oxide or titanium dioxide ); they are usually better tolerated than chemical filters on reactive skin.

Dry skin

Formulas with moisturizing ingredients help prevent the feeling of tightness and dryness.

Days of sport, beach or intense heat

In these cases, it is advisable to use water-resistant sunscreens ; otherwise, sweat and water will remove them in minutes.

Thinking that sunscreen is not necessary in winter or on cloudy days

This myth continues to cause harm. UVA radiation , which penetrates the deepest and is responsible for premature aging and age spots, doesn't disappear on cloudy days or in colder months. It's present 365 days a year, even behind the glass of your home or office window.

Incorporating sunscreen into your daily routine, regardless of the season or weather, is the beauty habit with the greatest long-term return you can have.

Small changes, big difference for your skin

Protecting yourself from the sun isn't complicated, but it does require doing it right. Sufficient amount, complete coverage, reapplication throughout the day, timely application, the right formula, and consistency year-round. These are the pillars of facial sun protection that truly works.

If you've been using sunscreen for a while but aren't sure you're doing it correctly, this is the perfect starting point. Your skin will thank you for it in ten years.
