Erythrulose is one of the key ingredients in self-tanners. It's not as well-known as DHA, but it has been used in sun care products for years thanks to its ability to achieve a more gradual and even golden tan, without the dreaded orange or patchy effect. Erythrulose offers a radiant and healthy glow without the need for increased sun exposure.
At Perfume's Club we've been seeing brands betting on this ingredient for some time now, and we're going to explain exactly what it is, how it works, and what it offers compared to other formulas.
Erythrulose is a plant-based sugar obtained from the fermentation of fruits. Therefore, it is an ingredient used in vegan cosmetics.
This sugar reacts with the skin and generates color in the outermost layer without the need for sun or artificial pigments. Unlike body makeup, it doesn't remain on the skin as a layer of color, and as the skin naturally renews itself, the color gradually fades away.

The main difference between DHA and erythrulose lies in how the color develops. With DHA, the color usually appears almost immediately after application. Erythrulose, on the other hand, works differently. The color develops gradually, giving you a little more leeway to correct any over-application.
At Perfume's Club, many of the formulas we recommend combine DHA and erythrulose. This blend allows for a more gradual result, contributing to a more natural and even self-tan.
The main advantage of a self-tanner with erythrulose compared to other self-tanners is that the color lasts for several days without needing constant reapplication. Furthermore, the result is even and fades gradually, without leaving areas lighter than others.
Because it's a sugar, erythrulose helps retain moisture in the skin, leaving a finish that doesn't dry it out or feel tight. It's perfect for women with dry skin.
If you decide to try self-tanner with erythrulose, there are a couple of things to keep in mind before applying it. Prepare your skin well with a gentle exfoliation and plenty of hydration. This will ensure an even, streak-free tan. Apply the product with gloves or wash your hands thoroughly afterward. Wait until it's completely dry before getting dressed.
The effect of self-tanner with erythrulose is temporary. It does not replace sun protection, so SPF is still essential for sun exposure.
What makes erythrulose special is its gradual effect. The color develops slowly and lasts for several days without leaving any faded areas. That's why many formulas include it as a main ingredient, either alone or combined with DHA to enhance the initial effect.
At Perfumes Club we have self-tanners with both active ingredients, together or separately, so you can choose according to the type of tan you are looking for.
